LEE HARPER

Lee Harper is a contemporary art practitioner, with a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts Hons (First Class) from the University of Tasmania, Australia.

Lees' interests are broad and can contain elements of ‘distance, place, and separation’ due to moving to Aotearoa/New Zealand from lutruwita/Tasmania in 2014.  With a fondness for 'complex cloth', her works can contain contemporary narratives interpreted through unconventional and defiant stitching, applique, and quilting techniques.

Considered by some a 'Quilt and Wagga' maker, her works are not generally recognised in conventional Quilting forums.

Since graduating, she has exhibited in group and solo shows at Chambers Art Gallery Christchurch, Ashburton Gallery, CoCA Christchurch, Refinery Art Space Nelson, M16 Canberra, Mils Gallery, Sydney, Blindside Melbourne, Launceston’s Sawtooth Gallery, Hobart’s Side Space Gallery, Contemporary Art Tasmania CAT, 146 Art Space, and Launceston’s Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery. Lee is also the recipient of a Tasmanian Government Arts Grant.

Lee has performed for Tasmania’s, Ten Days on the Island’s Window Experiment and Project Lyttleton’s - Strange Bedfellows.

Lee is a three-time consecutive finalist in the  ZONTA Ashburton Female Art Award  (NZ)  in 2019, 2020, and 2021 as well as a two-time finalist in Changing Threads Fibre Art Awards, Nelson (NZ), 2019 and 2022.

Group exhibitions include The Associates- Chambers Art Gallery, Ashburton Gallery & Columbo, The Demolition Exhibition at Presbyterian Support- Christchurch, supporting Feasta, Lyttleton’s Harbour Arts Trusts’ Ka Awatea - Time of Awakening, and had her first small solo Aotearoa/New Zealand exhibition A Seamstress of Sorts at Art Box (ARA).

Lee is a member of The Associates Aotearoa.
